UAL Level 3 Diploma in Music Performance and Production 2024/25 PROJECT 1 - Arts by the Sea Festival
Zak Baker
Task 1:
I formed a band with a friend and two other people letting me meet some other people as well as having some familiar surroundings. The Band is formed of me Zak (Bass), Alfie (Drums), Paige (Vocals) and Jazzie (Guitar). As a group we quickly established our styles and became good friends starting to find out each others music tastes and starting to discuss possible ideas of a set list for this upcoming event. It quickly became apparent that some of us have a differing music taste making it a challenge to settle on specific songs we would all enjoy performing and learning. After a couple days of debate any many songs being suggested we settled on Fade into you - Mazzy Star, Yellow - Coldplay and Misery Business - Paramore.
Task 2:
A couple weeks into practice and having learnt all the songs our guitarist unfortunately fell ill and it seemed unlikely they would be able to make it to the performance and would have to drop out. This then led to us remaining members to form a contingency plan of dropping misery business for Valarie - Mark Ronson - feat Amy Winehouse and acquiring another guitarist. We then practiced and learnt this new revised set until we were confident it would lead to a successful performance on the day.
It came to the day of the show and fortunately our guitarist was well enough to make the performance so we ended up doing a split setlist of Yellow, Fade into you and Valarie. We arrived at the venue with plenty of time before our scheduled performance to make sure everything was set up and ready to go. Roughly 10 minutes before the allotted performance time we gathered behind the stage to make sure our instruments were in tune, ready and we knew what order we would perform the songs in. Eventually we entered the stage and quickly took our positions plugging in our instruments before starting the performance. The first song ran faultlessly until the second song where our guitarist had some stage fright. This led me to coming in early to help encourage them and start the song off not causing any delays and helping it run smoothly. After the second song we departed the stage to let another performance elsewhere take place due to some timings mishaps early in the night with prior bands. We then came on half way through the performance to re set up and seamlessly segue between that performance and ours with the drummer counting us and in and us perfectly starting to play Valarie as the other performance finished. Unfortunately due to the short time frame we had to learn this songs due to the unforeseen circumstance of our guitarist falling ill i had forgot about a drum beat change during the song. This then lead me to loose my place within the bass line but i was able to very quickly rectify this problem and continue playing the song without making it obviously i had made a minor mishap. After we finished we exited the stage and packed down our gear ready for the next act to perform.
Task 3:
I think that the performance was fairly successful and went very well with only the slight slip up of the bassline during Valarie. We all worked very well together and i thoroughly enjoyed playing live and in front of an audience. Although it is not my first time performing live and i have many times before it was still very fun and one of the biggest crowds i have performed to and was another experience i can use o better my skills and knowledge about live performance. I find with each time i perform i become more and more comfortable often finding myself moving around the stage, interacting with other band members and looking out to the crowd while enjoying myself. In light of this project although i wasn't playing my usual genre of music i want to continue on with the band as its letting me further develop my skills and music taste with other styles and genres of music outside of my comfort zone.
